I started on the PhD journey to find answers to the question, "How can we learn better, when machines are faster and smarter?" 4 years on, I have learnt a lot and I want to share these insights with you, in the hope that they can help make a difference!

I am grateful to Civil Service College for collaborating together on this new workshop - Developing your Learning Agility. It contains all the research insights in actionable ideas to help us and our people learn deeper and faster.

Do you or your people:

  • Feel there is no time to learn?

  • Know how to accelerate your learning?

  • Know what skills you need to learn to thrive?

  • Find it difficult to unlearn unproductive behaviours?

  • Hesitate to try out new areas for fear of being a beginner again?

  • Know how to learn anew and find answers in ambiguous situations with no formulas?

These are real challenges faced by busy achieving professionals.
Yet we need to overcome these challenges.

Why is Learning Agility important now?

  • We are solving more complex and new problems with no precedence or SOPs. We need to learn to find new answers.

  • Innovative solutions often come at the intersection of different areas of expertise, e.g., HR + Tech + Data, we need fluency across different areas of expertise.

  • Job roles and requirements are changing. Employees may be recruited to do ABC but with the changes, they now need to do XYZ, how can they pick up quickly?

  • Individual learning agility is a foundation for organizational agility to succeed in new business models and transformation.

For these reasons, World Economic Forum, McKinsey, Pearson, and SkillsFuture highlight learning skills as one of the top future skills

Research shows people who are resourceful learners:

  • Have multiple areas of expertise.

  • Are more insightful and multi-disciplinary in perspectives.

  • Think actively about what they don’t know and have refined strategies to find answers in every new situation or challenge.

  • Reflect using a third-person perspective to improve how they learn.

Learning Agility is one of the most fundamental skills.

Learning Agility is the capability to
accelerate our learning through our motivation, attitudes, process
and workplace conditions.

But wait, don't we already know how to learn?

We got our education and came this far. What are we missing? This is a totally reasonable question :)

Most of us can learn - we pay attention, reason and apply the ideas.

But most of us do not think about how we are learning, manage our motivation, strategize our learning process or reflect to milk our experience fully.

So we waste time and energy, and don't achieve our aspirations fully.

But,
can we really teach learning agility? Is it a skill?

Yes, we can teach people how to be better learners by:

  • Finding their drive for learning

  • Changing unproductive attitudes

  • Designing their learning process and

  • Creating an environment to support their learning.

What really are the benefits of learning agility?

  • Develop more skills and capabilities

  • Have a deeper sense of identity and go beyond your job title or functional expertise

  • Feel happier, more empowered and have more career options

Skill mastery in 4 steps .png
This learning agility helps us make sense of and be successful in a rapidly changing world where there is no set formula.

This is critical because in today’s world:
  • Rapid knowledge decay impacts everyone from recent graduates to mature employees.

  • With disruptive change, a tsunamic wave of jobs will be displaced and new roles emerge.

  • New skill sets are needed in the digital world as we work alongside machines and create value that cannot be accomplished by machines.

  • Organizations need the right skills set to implement new strategies successfully.

  • World Economic Forum, McKinsey and SkillsFuture have listed learning agility as one of the top critical skill to thrive in the future of work.

  • Yet, we are typically not taught how to learn more effectively.
